What Corporate Travelers Might Like to Know About San Francisco

San Francisco is for the socially adventurous and the politically grounded. So if you’re in town on business, take the time to loosen that tie and chat with the locals. You run the risk of learning a lesson or two about what it takes to stand out in the crowd.

San Francisco’s History
The city by the bay is known for its steep inclines and crooked streets. It has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by thick fogs. Originally a Spanish trading post, the city was inundated with prospectors during the mid-19th century Gold Rush. In 1848 the population swelled from 1,000 residents to 25,000. San Francisco continued to grow, quickly becoming the largest city on the West Coast, until the 1906 earthquake and fire devastated the city. The Beaux Arts style of architecture for which the city is known was established as a result of the fire.

Although San Francisco has a diverse economy, it is known worldwide for its dot coms and for Silicon Valley. Here fortunes are amassed and squandered as software engineers and business entrepreneurs vie for the next big thing in website design.

Landmarks in San Francisco
Notable landmarks in San Francisco include the cable cars, Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf , Pier 39, Alcatraz, and the Golden Gate Bridge. The cable cars were built in 1873, and although destroyed by the fire in 1906, have remained an icon of San Francisco ever since. Ghiradelli Square is home to the famous Ghiradelli chocolates. Take a factory tour and then step into the store to take home a few choice squares. Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 are decidedly tourist traps, but they can still be a fun walk. Alcatraz is so much more than the infamous federal prison it became. It was also the first lighthouse on the West Coast, a Civil War fortress, and a bird sanctuary. Take in the rich history of the island with a cruise or a tour. The Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most recognizable San Francisco landmark. Completed in 1937, the bridge was originally painted International Orange as a sealant. Today when the color is caught up in a sunset the bridge is gorgeous. You could also take a short drive from San Francisco down Highway 1 to Carmel and Big Sur. The scenery along this drive is breathtaking and the small towns exude charm. There’s also nearby Sausalito, and Monterey.

The People of San Francisco
But what is perhaps most notable about San Francisco are the people who live there. The Bush Man. The Antler Guy. The Pink Unitard Unicycle Guy. There are no blank slates here in San Francisco. Each person who crosses the Golden Gate Bridge into the Bay area is determined to be an individual. Here is the birthplace of Mother Jones magazine, after all. The city has a distinct coffeehouse culture, which is perpetuated by the many outstanding public and private universities that are established there. For permanent residents, the property values are high and the standard of living is one of the best in the country. If you’re in town on business, take in the “human safari” and bring your best sense of adventure.

A Few Things to See and Do in San Francisco:
1.) Cable cars. For the business traveler who loves the unique beat of the independent musician, a good place to start is down where the cable cars begin. Street musicians gather there in hopes of getting tipped by the tourists. And the cable cars are fun too.

2.) Telegraph Ave. What do you get when you combine one of the most prestigious public universities in the country with one of the most progressive metropolitan areas in the world? You get Berkeley, CA. Telegraph Ave is an excellent place to view the wares of the various street vendors, to see students bicycling to class, and to get a highly intellectual cup of coffee.

3.) City Lights Book Store. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac, what more is there to say? The founders of the Beat generation live on in one of the most famous independent bookstores in the country. Catch a poetry reading of the next generation in great American writers, or chat about liberal politics in the aisles with one of the many knowledgeable bookstore clerks.

San Francisco is for the socially adventurous and the politically grounded. So if you’re in town on business, take the time to loosen that tie and chat with the locals. You run the risk of learning a lesson or two about what it takes to stand out in the crowd.
