What Corporate Travelers Might Like to Do in Cambridge

If you’re in Cambridge on business, expect to pay a premium for corporate housing. When rent control was eliminated in 1994 many citizens of Cambridge had to relocate because the cost of housing was so high. Still if you’re lucky enough to be relocated to the city, there are many museums to see, many lectures to attend, and many books to discover.

Enjoy the History of Cambridge
Cambridge was founded in 1630 and was named after the University of Cambridge in England. In 1636 Harvard University was established as a training center for ministers. Today’s Brattle Street is still known as Tory Row, because its buildings date back to the American Revolution. Over the next century Cambridge would become more tied to Boston through the construction of bridges and rows, and thus would experience rapid growth. Industrialization became prevalent and several factories were established. By the dawn of the twentieth century Cambridge was one of the most notable cities in New England. Massachusetts Institute of Technology was moved to its present location in Cambridge from Boston in 1912. The city is today still known mainly for the presence of the two large universities there- Harvard and MIT.

Harvard Museum of Natural History
See the famous “Glass Flowers” at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. They were created by father-son glass artists Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka during the turn of the twentieth century, and are so specific and natural that it’s difficult to tell whether or not they are real. The museum also holds over 12,000 specimens including dinosaurs, meteorites and gemstones.

MIT Museum
The MIT Museum presents exhibitions centering around such inventions as robots, holography, and cutting edge art and technology. Admission is free on Sundays. But if you’re going to see MIT, one of the most interesting sidebars to student culture is the elaborate practical jokes (called “hacks”) played upon the school itself. For example, on September 11, 2006, a fire truck was placed on top of the dome of one of the buildings.

Fogg Museum and the Busch-Reisinger Museum
The Fogg Museum and the Busch-Reisinger Museum are both closed to the public until 2013, due to a large renovation project. All collections will be on view at the third of Harvard’s art museums, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, beginning in Fall 2008.

Unique Shopping Experience
Cambridge offers a unique shopping experience. With over 30 bookstores in a 6-mile radius, Cambridge offers some of the best book shopping possibly in the world. There’s also the gift stores of the many museums in the area- especially the Harvard Museum of Natural History and the MIT Museum. The Garment District is perhaps the most famous of the vintage clothing stores in the area, because it sells clothing for $1.50 a pound.

Cambridge is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is home to some of the most prestigious universities in the world. It retains the charm of a small New England city while having access to some of the greatest minds in the country. It is a crossroads of great thinking and ideas, and the corporate traveler lucky enough to be relocated here should take advantage of all the city has to offer.

Cambridge Corporate Apartments: A Welcome Alternative to Hotel Stays

Contrary to most hotel rooms, corporate apartments have a comfortable, home-like feel, and a lot more room to relax and unwind. This makes them perfect for extended-stay business travelers, entertainment industry clients, relocating employees, and others seeking a spacious and cost-cutting alternative to lengthy stays in a hotel. Also, many corporate apartments offer social events and club houses, not to mention kitchens where you can cook your own meals. After all, while restaurant meals and expense accounts might be a treat to rookies, seasoned professionals want something more from their stay. They want a home-away-from-home experience that only furnished apartments can offer.
